Mercury Gives False Alarms

Q. I have a 1997 Mercury Marquis; 51,000 miles; automatic; fuel injection; ABS; PS; AC, Cruise. On a few occasions, the Check Engine yellow light is displayed although my mechanic has not found anything wrong. He has reset the computer twice and the light stays off for a few months, then returns. He thinks that it should be disregarded. Your comments please.

Thank you,
Jack

A. Something is causing that light to come on. It's either a malfunction in the system or a defective computer. I would recommend taking it to a Ford dealer and seeing what their opinion on it is. That computer is 5/50,000 and if you bring documentation that this problem has exhibited for a while, they should do something for you.

Also if you can remember the conditions when the light came on, that might provide a clue as to what might be happening. Please, let me know how you make out.
