Escort Code 13 and 33

Q. I retrieved two error codes from DCL to the Service Engine Light. It blinked a 13 and a 33. I can only find 3 digit trouble codes. Are there 2 digit codes? If so what is a 13 and a 33? 1994 Ford Escort Wagon 1.9 liter, 97,000 miles.

Chas

A. Code 13 is: "Cannot control rpm during KOER Self-Test low rpm check" and code 33 is: "EGR valve opening not detected".

Code 13 is probably being caused by a dirty or bad Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid. You can try removing it and give it a good cleaning as well as the throttle chamber. That will, most likely, fix that problem.

The code 33 is probably being caused by a problem with the EGR valve or the EGR control system.

The one thing that could cause both codes is a vacuum leak. So the first thing I would do is to check all the vacuum lines and make sure they are good and connected properly.
