Mustang Brake Interlock

Q. I have a 1996 Mustang GT, 4.6 liter, automatic, 33,000 miles, fuel injected, ABS, P/S, A/C and cruise. Power windows, locks, seats. No past problems or work done.

Ok I was headed into a blockbuster to grab a movie just for about 5 minutes, come back out turn off my alarm and get in my car. Turn the car on press the brake to shift into reverse and it won't let me. Couldn't press the button on the gearshift at all. Everything comes up ok, my lights turn on, car starts etc. Trying to figure out the problem I step on the brake and my brake lights don't come on. So I'm assuming maybe an electrical problem, because my car doesn't think I am stepping on the brake at all, hence I can't shift. Can't even shift into neutral. Do you have any advice on what's going on?

Thanks,
Kevin

A. The first thing I would check is the fuse and fusible links and make sure they are all good. Since the brake lights don't come on, you may have a bad brake light switch as well. I think the problem is in one of those two areas.
