Squeaky Honda Horn

Q. I have a 1994 Honda Civic DX, Auto Transmission, 110,000 miles. The car has a rubber rubbing on rubber sound coming from the steering wheel or steering column in the interior of the car when I make low speed right hand turns. Any ideas on what it could be?

The steering fluid is full but has never been flushed. I have sucked some out of the reservoir and replaced it with new but that didn't work.

A. There are two likely possibilities. One is the horn contacts are dry and need lubricating and the other is the small universal joints in the steering column need lubrication. I would also check to make sure the plastic steering column cover is not rubbing against the wheel.

To lubricate the horn contacts you wheel need to remove the steering wheel and use a white lithium grease. To lubricate the universal joints, about all you can do is spray it with some CRC 5-56 and let it soak in. It will take a little time for the CRC to penetrate so I would spray them down a couple of times a day and let it work in.
