Volkswagen Jetta Starter

Q. Hi Vince, 1986 Volkswagen Jetta 5 speed gas engine. Who's bright idea was it to use Allen head bolts to hold the starter in place? Can you tell I'm having a hard time with them? I have an 8mm 3/8" drive socket. Is that the correct size? It seems to have some play in it and I'm trying desperately not to strip it. Any advice you can give me if I do strip the bolt? Any advice on replacing the starter in general?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Volkswagen Jetta Starter

A. Who's idea was it to use Allen head bolts? I don't know, but if you find him let me know. I have several choice words, in English and German, for him.

8mm is the right size, but if it is a little sloppy, try a 5/16", that should fit a bit tighter.

The only hint I can give you for removing the starter is before removing the starter mounting bolts install an engine lifting device to support the weight of the engine. Other than that it's just pure hard work.
