Cherokee High Idle

Q. Vincent, Good Day!

1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo
4.0 liter 6 Cylinder
Automatic Transmission
179,500 miles
Fuel Injection
No ABS
P/S, A/C

The problem I have is the following: Intermittently, after startup, the car idles very high (about 3,000 RPM). Sometimes it kicks itself out of this mode, sometimes I have to shut the car off and restart. In normal idle mode (1,000 RPM), If I let the car idle long enough the car's RPM slowly creeps up.

The PCV system has been cleaned many times and this alleviates the problem for about a week. Parts of the PCV system have been replaced. I have found oil on the air filter. I do leak oil (even after replacing the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket ) I have had this problem for almost ten years (Since I owned the car, just getting sick of it now). Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

A. I have seen this before. There was a recall, #90V177000, that replaced a defective Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). I would take it to the dealer and see if the recall was performed and if not, get it done as soon as possible.
