Kia Wants A Deep Throat

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla: I often search for articles on the About Network, mostly on Do It Yourself Car Repair.

I'm looking for information on exhaust systems. I own a 1995 Kia Sportage and want to do some work on its exhaust. However, I'm not sure my muffler shop is being sincere. They want to replace/relocate the muffler (from the rear axle area to below the cargo area) and they want to install bigger (from 2" to 2 1/4") line.

I'm looking for a deep not noisy sound and would really appreciate some help!!!

From San Juan, Puerto Rico, Thanks!
Juan

A. Why they would want to relocate the muffler is beyond me, unless they are trying to get a performance muffler in there.

I used to manage a muffler shop on Long Island and I used to do a lot of custom exhaust work. I even built a set of headers for a high performance "cigarette" racing boat. What I used to use to get a deep, throaty sound were glass packs. They were very similar to the Thrush brand "mufflers" which were popular for that deep sound.

A glass pack is tube shaped and filled with fiberglass. They come in different lengths for different sounds and sizes to fit standard pipes. They can be a direct replacement for standard mufflers. You will need to check your local shops or parts stores for waht is available and legal in your area. As they "break in" the sound gets somewhat deeper depending on the length.
