Ford Explorer Fuel Gauge

Q. Fuel gauge reads correctly when the engine is started but soon drops to EMPTY and stays there. All other gauges work normally. Is there an access hole above the in-tank sensor and what tests can I do from there to isolate the problem?

1994 Ford Explorer Eddie Bower 4.0 liter V-6

Thanks,
Jim

A. Sorry Jim, no access hatch to get to the sending unit.

This is a simple circuit (see below) and very easy to test. Unplug the connector to the fuel tank and ground the yellow/white wire. If the gauge goes to FULL, then you have a bad sending unit. If not, then you have a bad fuel gauge.
