Chrysler New Yorker Only Has Defrost

Q. Hello Vince, I have a 1992 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue four door sedan with 170,000 miles. It's a 3.3 V-6 with A/C. I have no complaints about this car. It serves me well. I maintain it at all times and performs as it did when it was new. still looks new too. what I need to know is: while the blower for the Heat or A/C is on, I only get air from the defroster vents.

No matter what setting I put it on I only get it from the defroster vents. Heat and air work perfectly. When I slide the temperature bar side to side, it works good. Just the directional vents won't. It's like the vent flapper is always closed. Is this done by vacuum, or electric? And what would you suggest.

I would really appreciate your advice on this. And if you require more info. please ,just let me know. It's starting to get a little cold here in Michigan, and I don't want to be hot headed with just a defroster.

Thanks,
Mike

A. The mode doors are operated by vacuum. Since none of the mode doors will work, and the system defaults to DEFROST when there is a problem, I would have to say the vacuum line from the intake manifold to the control panel is broken or pinched.

Look on top of the intake manifold and there will be a vacuum line that goes from there to the firewall and inside the car. This is the vacuum supply line for the Heating and A/C system. Make sure it is in good shape and connected at both ends. You may have to get under the dash board to check the inside connection. I'm pretty sure this line is the problem.
