Trans Am Surging

Q. Vince, I have a 1997 Trans Am (5.7L 350) with an automatic OD transmission. Today it started surging during light to mid throttle and also at stop lights. It gets especially bad if I turn the A/C on. The alternator holds a good charge so I don't think it's a power problem.

The plugs and wires are new and in good shape so I'm inclined to blame the EGR valve. What are the symptoms of a bad EGR valve? Does this sound like my problem? Thank you for your insight.

Thanks again,
Mark

A. These are the symptoms of a bad EGR valve:

  • Engine stops after cold start.
  • Engine stops at idle after deceleration.
  • Vehicle surges during cruise.
  • Rough idle.

So it is a definite possibility that you have a bad EGR valve or a problem in the EGR vacuum or electrical circuit. The EGR system is known to be a problem with GM vehicles which makes it even more likely.

Of course there are other possibilities as well, clogged fuel filter, dirty injectors, weak fuel pump etc. Testing the EGR system would be a good place to start.
