BMW Steering Box Adjustment

Q. Vincent, I have some "play" in the steering on my 1992 BMW 525i. I was going to replace the steering box when I had two different mechanics tell me that this slack could be adjusted out in the steering box. I am having trouble finding a good resource on how to do this myself.

Would you please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Jim

A. How about if I told you how to do it? Would that be a good direction?

If you look at the top of the steering box, you will see the adjusting screw and lock nut. Holding the adjuster with a large screwdriver, break loose the lock nut and turn the adjuster in ¼ turn and lock it up. Take it for a ride and see how it feels. There should be about one inch of play in the steering wheel. Keep adjusting in a ¼ turn, no more, until you get down to that one inch of play.
