Toyota Doesn't Like A/C

Q. I have a 1995 Toyota Tacoma with a 2.4L 4 cyl. engine. It has a manual transmission, 60,000 miles, fuel injected, P/S, and A/C. When I start the engine cold and soon there after turn on the A/C, the truck doesn't idle up and instead will try to die. However, once it is warmed while idling the truck ides up when the A/C comes and runs fine. But that's not the big problem, when I am driving with the A/C on, and take the truck out of gear to stop the truck will die or almost die. I think maybe it could have something to do with the vacuum system because I hear a high pitched noise when the truck is trying to die, but perhaps you can help me more.

Nick

A. It sure does sound (no pun intended) like a vacuum leak. When the computer sees that the A/C is on, it will bump up the idle speed to compensate for the extra load. If the noise is that loud, then it should be easy enough to find.

There is also a possibility of a restriction in the A/C as well. The A/C compressor will be fighting to overcome that restriction and place a bigger load on the engine then the computer can compensate for, causing the stalling. This isn't very likely, just another possibility.
