Honda Light Bulbs
Q. Hi, I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX sedan. It has a 1.5 liter water-cooled OHC - what does that mean? Is it a SOHC? Any way, the rear right bulb has blown out. I think it is the tail light or parking light. Which one's which?
The manual doesn't say. Well, the bulb has gone out and when I checked the bulb, it was a different kind than the one in the manual. Which one should I go by?
Thank you for you time,
RockyA. You have a Single Over Head Cam (SOHC) engine which means there is one camshaft in the head. Some engines are a Dual Over Head Cam (DOHC) which means there is a separate camshafts for the intake valves and exhaust valves. Engines with the camshaft inside the block are usually referred to as Over Head valve (OHV) engines.
As for the bulbs, I'm not sure of the arrangement of the lights on that model. So many cars, so many arrangements. If the bulb that has burned out has a dual filament, then it's probably a turn signal/brake light bulb. You can tell a dual filament bulb by the two brass contacts at the base of the bulb. The bulb number would be 1157. If it is a single filament bulb, an 1156, then there will be only one contact in the base of the bulb.
Don't use an 1157 in place of an 1156 since it will cause all kinds of weird problems. Replace the bulb with the same bulb that was in there. If you have a doubt, take the bulb to an auto parts store and they will get you the right bulb.
