Stubborn Brake Drums

Q. I have an 1982 VW Rabbit which needs the rear drums and parking cables to be replaced. The original drums were pretty rusted and I'm having problems removing them. Any suggestions?

Martin

A. Most likely there is a ridge on the inside of brake drum that is hanging up on the brake shoes. What you'll have to do is back off the parking brake adjustment and the service brake adjustment. You'll see a rubber plug (if the last guy who worked on it put it back) on the rear of the backing plate, just below the metal brake line. Stick a screwdriver or brake tool in there and turn the adjuster back until you can slide the drum off.
