Sticking Wheel Lock

Q. I have been having problems with the steering lock on my car, it sticks sometimes. I don't have any idea on how a steering lock works, and haven't been able to find anything on them. I would appreciate if you could give me some information on them, or just tell me a web site with some information.

Thanks,
Fres

A. A steering lock locks the steering wheel so it can not be turned. All steering locks use a bolt type lock, similar to a dead bolt lock on a door, to do the actual locking.

In all the cases of a hard steering lock I have come across, it is due to pressure on the bolt. If the steering wheel is held in a position when the key is turned to the lock position, the wheel will turn until it locks. If it wants to turn more and when the bolt locks, that's where the pressure comes in to hold the bolt when you go to unlock it.

Jiggling the steering wheel a little bit while you unlock the wheel will relieve the pressure and allow you to unlock the wheel.
