Honda Civic Makes Noises On Turns

Q. Hi, I have a 1990 Honda Civic, automatic transmission and 102,000 miles on it. I plan to keep this car for many, many years to come. My problem: whenever I make a right or left turn I hear a noise. At first I thought maybe the tires were rubbing or hitting against something; but I don't think so. It stated doing this about a month ago. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rena

A. It is most likely a bad Constant Velocity (CV) Joint. The CV joint has a rubber boot around it to keep grease in and dirt and water out. Over time these boots crack or get torn, allowing the grease to come out and dirt and water to enter.

The joints and boots are replaceable separately, but at this point it would be more cost effective to replace the whole axle with rebuilt axle assemblies.
