Chevy Has No Fire Down Below

Q. I have a 1991 V-6 with EFI. It has been acting intermittently (I.E. it will start sometimes and then it won't). Fuel pump, spark control all have been replaced in the past year. Can hear the pump come on when ignition is turned to start. Tried starter fluid in the past and it did the job right off (now no effect).

Is there test equipment you can buy to test spark at plugs or a simple way to verify gas is getting to the carburetor (they tell me it is a mist, not a stream now). Would a Chiltons manual include a simplified wiring diagram of what components interact with the computer and any theory of EFI??

Any help appreciated. Again drove the truck to the store Saturday morning without any problem, a couple of hours latter tried to start it and no go! Sunday morning it started!!!

Thanks,
Jack

A. Chances are that if you spray stuff into the throttle body and it won't light off, you have a spark problem. If you see fuel being injected but not starting, there is a tool called a spark tester that can be installed on a plug wire and then the engine is cranked. The tester should spark or light depending on the way it's designed to work. If not, possible ignition module, pick-up coil in the distributor. Coil? Coil wire burnt? No power to ECM?
