Groaning Intrepid

Q. Hi Vince, I'm new to this site, and I'm glad to be a member. It looks like a really good site. I have a 1995 Dodge Intrepid ES, 3.5 liter, auto, A/C, everything power. 109,000 miles, ABS, fuel injection, rack & pinion.

The problem I'm having is a bumping/grumbling noise in the front end, sometimes going over bumps and sometimes on flat surfaces. I checked it and could find nothing wrong. The dealer said that it needed new struts, and strut mounts. I took it to a local and reputable shop for an alignment, at which time they checked and found nothing. I have heard that the problem could be stabilizer links. I would appreciate any suggestions to help solve this problem.

Thanks for your assistance.
Dan

A. Welcome Dan, glad to have you as a member. I'm here to help so if there is anything I can do, just give me a holler.

Strut mounts could be the problem as well as the stabilizer bar bushings. Less common but a possibility are the control arm bushings. Locating a noise like this can be a challenge, but since there aren't that many possibilities it should be fairly easy to track down.

There are a couple of TSBs about this problem issued by Chrysler. One involved replacing the stabilizer bushings and the other was to remove some temporary locating pins in the strut tops.

What I would suggest is getting a can of CRC 5-56 and spraying down all the bushings and strut mounts and see if that helps. You may have to do it three or four times before you make a difference. If that doesn't help, then the exact cause will have to be located and repaired.
