Under Achieva
Q. I have a problem with my 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva. The following are some basic information:
Mileage is 18,000,
power loaded,
2.3 liter engineThe problem is sometimes when I start the engine, after the car runs a couple of seconds, if I didn't press the gas pedal or press the gas lightly, the engine would stall automatically. On the other hand, if I press the gas very harder after I start the engine, maybe the car can run well. I would like you give me some advice.
Thank you very much!
A. At first glance one might think the engine may have a rich condition that may build up after the last shutdown. Possibly a leaking pressure regulator. If we look at what happens to the EFI as a whole when the throttle is opened we would see a slightly richer mixture, a slight change in ignition timing, and the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor will retract slightly. On some V-6 engines the IAC motors retract after the engine is shut down. Thus the ECM can't see that and delivers too much fuel at start up. In this case the engine stalls and has a longer restart cranking time.
This is a Quad 4 and they are a stand alone breed. I would look at what the scanner data can tell you. I would look at the exhaust, smell, color. (fuel mixture) Inspect the fuel system. Make sure it has good pressure and isn't leaking down. Even if it doesn't seem related tap test the ECM. Look at the basic ignition system parts and their output and condition. Small problems like this can be the hardest to diagnosis.
