Heavy Oil? Why?

Q. I have a 1993 Honda Civic SI. My mechanic wants me to put 20w50 oil now in the engine? Why is this? Also, when is the best time to check the oil, when the engine is hot or cold?

Thanks
Neil

A. The only reason I can think of offhand for him wanting you to use a heavier oil is to try and compensate for engine wear. Sometimes a heavier oil will take up some of the slack in a worn engine, but all it will do is delay the inevitable. If the engine is worn out, only a rebuild or replacement will be a long term fix.

Checking the oil hot or cold will yield the same results so it doesn't matter.
