Toyota P0440 And P0446 Codes

Q. Dear Vincent: Hello! My check engine light is on, and I had a diagnostic run on it, and it came up with codes 440 and 446, which have to do with some sort or fuel leak I believe. My husband said that the auto store said that it could be the "fuel purge filter"?? Where is this located on the car, can we fix it ourselves??

Also, could this cause us to get lousy fuel injection?? The car is a 1998 Toyota Corolla with 60,300 miles on it, 4 cylinder, power steering.

Thanks,
Robin

A. Codes # P0440 and PO446 refer to the evaporative emissions cannister and gas tank. It means the computer sees a leak in the system. It can be caused by a loose hose or bad cannister. It can also be caused by driving with a loose gas cap or defective gas cap. The codes do not refer to a fuel leak, they refer to the vapors in the tank.

Check the cap to make sure it's tight, turn it closed until it clicks. You can clear the codes by opening the hood (engine off) remove the cover of the fuse block next to the battery. Remove the EFI fuse for 10 seconds (locations are labeled on the cover) and reinstall it. The engine light will now be off. If the check engine light comes back on take it to your dealer for diagnosis, they are best equipped to handle it. It should take them no more than an hour to tell you exactly what you need. Good Luck.
