Chevy Tacoma Engine Hesitation

Q. Vince, I would be very grateful for some help here. I have taken my 1998 Chevy Tacoma in to the dealership twice, and they keep giving it back to me saying they have fixed the problem, but they didn't. I put a K&N air filter in, and they say that it got oil on the air sensor, so they keep cleaning it off, charging me, and telling me that it is fixed.

The air filter is not the problem, because it was there before I put the filter in. I have a manual 4 cylinder 2.7 1998 tacoma. It has about 80,000 miles on it. When I am driving at a steady speed, or accelerating, the engine will lose power for a second, and then re-gain power.

When it loses power, I can punch the accelerator and it will stop. But when I just let it lose power, at a certain point the Check Engine Light will come on. I bought the truck about a year ago, with 60,000 miles on it from the dealership, so I assumed that all of the services had been done on it.

Does this sound like a simple problem such as wires, spark plugs, or does something in the engine need to be adjusted.

Thanks,
Scott

A. Most likely not the plugs or the wires. The PCM should set a code when the Check Engine Light comes on and this code may be the key to fixing your truck!
