Cherokee Fog Lights

Q. Vince, 1999 Jeep Cherokee, 6 cylinder. The Fog lights stopped working one stormy night. However, if I jiggled the switch I could get them to stay on. The jiggling convinced me that the switch was bad. It was easy to replace so I popped in a new switch.

A few storms later the same problem reappeared. It can’t be the switch it is brand new. Jiggling the switch gets me an occasional ‘flash’ of the fog lights but they won’t stay on. The lights/bulbs are okay so where can the problem be? I popped the relay, however, it is tough to see through that black plastic cover. What can the problem be? The relay?

A. I'm assuming we are talking factory fog lights, and not after market fog lights added by you or the dealer.

The fog light relay in the history system is to prevent the fog lights from turning on when the headlights are off or on high beam. If the headlights are on low beam, power then goes to the fog light switch.

It does sound like another bad switch. So it's possible that there is a high resistance connection that is causing a high current draw that is burning up the switch. I would check all the connections and make sure they are clean and tight. Also make sure the wires are not chafed and touching the body anywhere.
