Chevy Silverado Ignition Lock

Q. Vincent, I have a 1988 Chevy Silverado 1500. The key intermittently gets stuck in the started position. When this happens the only way to free the key is to turn it forward, my starter isn't happy about that, and it'll come free and return to the stopped position. This happens with several keys, so I'm thinking the ignition cylinder needs to be replaced. Can you explain how to do this?

Thanks,
Bob

Chevy Silverado Ignition Lock

A. You will need to remove the steering wheel, lock plate snap ring and plate and turn signal switch. It will pull out enough without pulling the wire harness all the way out. On the lower right side, approximately 5:00, there is a hex headed bolt that needs to be removed. This is a lock pin that holds the cylinder into the column. You will need a wheel puller and a lock ring compressor to do the job.
