Ticking Nissan 300-ZX

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1986 Nissan 300ZX Turbo with a V6 engine, manual transmission, 73,000 miles on the car, it is fuel injected, has regular disk brakes, with P/S, A/C, Cruise control and Rack and pinion steering.

The problem is that I have a "clicking noise" in the dash. It has the Digital Type Combination Meter dash board. This noise starts as soon as I turn the ignition on and it does it when the car is not in motion and when the car is in motion. The noise seems to be coming from directly behind the speedometer. The car is in perfect condition with the exception of this problem. I am the original owner.

I have the service manual for the car, but I can't find anything in the service manual that addresses this problem.

Any help you can provide, I would certainly appreciate.
Jim

A. I have heard this noise before and it is coming from the speedometer cable. There was a TSB on it but I can't find it so I'm going to do the best I can for you from memory. Wrapped around the speedometer cable just before the firewall is a noise suppressor. It's a big black thing, you can't miss it. What you need to do is loosen it and turn it 90° and tighten it up. That should get rid of the ticking noise you're hearing.
