Emissions And EGR Valve
Q. I have a 1982 Ford 302. The factory pollution control devices are just about all gone. The engine seems to run fine without them, however I have been told that my EGR is not functioning. I have also been advised that I can totally do away with the EGR by blocking it off.
However, I have a problem with timing ping when I do. My question is - How can I avoid ping without the EGR? And - If I replace the EGR, will getting vacuum direct from the carburetor port work the valve correctly and help with the timing ping?
Thanks,
ThomasA. You can eliminate the pinging by retarding the timing until the ping is gone. I can't tell you how many degrees, you just have to move it a little at a time until it's gone.
The EGR recirculates exhaust gas and this lowers the combustion temperature in the cylinders. Primarily it is to lower exhaust emissions, but it also helps prevent the pinging to some extent. If you want to hook it up, you need to connect it to a ported vacuum source, not manifold vacuum.
Ported vacuum will open the valve in relation to the throttle. Manifold vacuum will keep it open all the time.
