Mazda Protege DX Transmission Light

Q. I have a 1994 Mazda Protege DX, 4cyl., DOHC, automatic, and anti lock. Once reaching a warm temperature the electronic failure indicator light comes on and also the hold lite flashes (has a selector button on gear shift that lets you hold a certain gear) and then it won't shift out of first.

Thanks,
Dave

A. There is a problem with the Electronic Transmission Controls. Ain't it amazing how I deduced that? Anyway, since I'm not really familiar with that particular system, and since the light is flashing, that tells me the transmission computer has detected a fault and stored a trouble code.

Since the computer stored a code it must be an electronic component that has malfunctioned and not a mechanical failure. The best I can do for you is recommend going to a Mazda dealer and they can plug in their diagnostic computer and pull the code. Then it should be a simple matter of replacing the failed component.

Sorry I can't be of more help to you.
