Dodge Caravan Fuel Pump Relay

Q. Hello Mr Ciulla, I found your site and thought I'd throw a question your way. I have a 1990 Dodge Caravan, 3.0 liter V-6 FI, automatic transmission, over 200,000 miles, ABS and A/C. Two weeks ago I replaced the fuel pump. It ran fine for that period. However, while idling at a stop, It quit running. I tried starting to no avail.

I checked the fuel line at the intake and it was pressurized but no indication that the pump was actually running. I could hear the new pump pressurize when I installed it but not after this incident. I exchanged for another pump, installed it, and it also does not work.

I was told a fuel pump relay is in the circuit somewhere but I cannot find one an any available schematics or manuals to locate it on the body. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dale

A. The Auto Shut Down (ASD) Relay controls power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, and electric fuel pump. Controlled by the Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) the ASD supplies power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, and electric fuel pump at all times when the ignition switch is in the START position.

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the SBEC is receiving reference signals from the distributor, power will also be supplied. If there is no reference signal after two seconds the SBEC will de-energize the ASD and no power will be supplied to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, or electric fuel pump.
