A/C Stopped Working

Q. I have a 1993 Chevy Cavalier, 3.1 V-6, Auto, Cruise, Power windows and locks, ABS, and A/C. Just getting broken in at 192,000 miles. A/C just quit, not a sound coming from anywhere. Light is on at dash panel, but clutch is not engaging. I'm thinking either a wire or a relay, but can't determine which relay.(I've found five but don't see problems with any of them) Any help greatly appreciated.

Ed

A. There are a couple of common problems you can check for here. The first thing I would do is unplug the A/C compressor and using a test light, see if there is power going to the compressor. If there is, then the problem is in the compressor itself.

If there is no power, the next thing I would do is jump the High/Low pressure switch and see if that gives me power at the compressor. if it does, then I have either a bad High/Low pressure switch or there is no or too little freon in the system. If jumping the switch doesn't give you any power, then you will need to get a wiring diagram of the A/C system and dig deeper. It may be a bad A/C switch, main A/C relay or a wiring problem.
