Chrysler Lebaron Idles Badly And Stalls

Q. I have a 1991 Chrysler Lebaron with a 2.5 liter engine. It is not turbo charged. This car has been running very rough and if a person does not keep their foot on the gas pedal to keep the rpm's up the check engine light will come on and eventually it will die. For example, if I am going approximately 20 mph down our Main Street, the check engine light will flicker on and off.

When idling, the car sounds like the old cars if the idle was set too low. It will die if a person does not rev it up. It is especially bad in reverse. It makes it extremely hard to back up because it continues to die. A person may need to restart it four times or so just trying to back up out of a parking space if you aren't able to give it much gas.

Having the AC and blower fan on increases the problem. Any suggestions on what it might be and where I should start in checking and replacing things? This has been going on for a couple of months or so and continues to get worse. We have replaced the spark plugs on it.

A. When the check engine light comes on, that indicates the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a malfunction and stored a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

The first thing to do is to pull the DTC(s) from the PCM and see what it is. You can look in my Troubleshooting section to find the procedure for pulling the codes and what they mean.
