Eldorado Can't Remember

Q. I am at my wits end with my car. It is a 1993 Eldorado. I have about 115,000 miles on it. Just recently the radio appears to be losing its memory. The time and stations all need to be re-entered. At times the radio will just shut off. Now my transmission is not shifting correctly.

Can there be a connection between the two? I have checked fuses and all are okay. I have had no luck with the local dealer, they refer me to a transmission shop in town. Please advise.

Thanks,
Laurie

A. I hate looking at Cadillac wiring diagrams, they always give me a headache.

Anyway, whenever I see two electrical problems like this, the first thing I do is see if they have something in common. In this case the two systems do not. I believe you have two separate problems.

Your car actually has four fuse boxes, three under the hood and one in the trunk.

You have the Main Fuse Block which is on the left side in front of the shock tower. The RH Maxi Fuse Block which is mounted on the inside fender and the LH Maxi Fuse Block which is between the other two. The one in the trunk is on the left side, just to the rear of the fuel door.

Fuse two in the RH Maxi Fuse Block feeds power to the trunk fuse box. Fuse D9 in the trunk fuse box feeds the radio. This fuse is hot at all times to preserve the time and radio presets. I would check this fuse and make sure its good.

After the fuse it gets quite complicated since there are four types of radios used in this car. They all use the same wire to feed the radio memory however. At this point the radio would have to come out to check power going into the radio if the fuse is good. There is a yellow wire going into the radio from the fuse and if you have power to the radio, then the radio itself is bad. If there is no power, then there is an open in the wire and it will have to be traced down.

The transmission control system is a little complicated also. Actually, everything on a Cadillac is complicated. The transmission is controlled by the PCM and if it detects a problem it will put the transmission into a "fail-safe" mode. When it goes into fail-safe it can be because of an internal problem or an external control problem. A shop with a scan tool will be able to pull the codes up and determine the problem.
