Questions and Answers

A Dim Bulb

Q. I have a 1995 Geo Metro, 1.0 L engine, manual transmission, 75,000 miles, fuel injected, non-ABS, with A/C only, rack and pinion steering. My question is: The passenger side headlight is dim with headlights on and DRL on. I installed a new headlight, and it was no help. I checked the wiring, and it was fine. If you run a jumper wire from the diver's side headlight to the passenger side headlight, it works fine. If you jump across the diode for the headlights, it works fine. I installed a new diode, but it didn't help. Is the problem in the wiring going to the diode? I took another diode from my other Geo, but it didn't help, so I know the diode was good. The headlights worked fine with that diode in the other Geo.

Thank you,
Terry

A. A dim headlight as you describe is due to a bad ground wire. I would check the plug and make sure it is clean and tight. If that checks out okay, then run a jumper wire from the ground terminal of the plug to ground. If that make the bulb go full bright, then you located the cause. Now just trace the factory ground wire and make sure it is clean and tight. Or you can run a new ground wire.
