Murdered Taurus

Q. I was perfectly happy with my 1987 Ford Taurus and I left it parked on street and flew away on vacation. I find that someone hit my car after bouncing off one car and into another even after he hit me. It had brand new tires on it, no A/C, no tilt-wheel, but it did have about 72,000 miles, I think, on it.

They are going to probably total it because the front bumper above and below it was laying on the ground, the driver's front side back to mirror was smashed in and tires couldn't move one way or the other. My daughter says it is undriveable. How much would you say would it cost to repair this car? (Guesstimate) If totaled, how much would it be worth. It was in pretty good shape.

Thanks,
Vicki

A. I hate to say this Vicki, but there's no "probably" about it, the insurance company will total the car. I ran your car through the Kelley Blue Book and (I made a couple of assumptions) with the milage and equipment (V-6 engine, P/S, AM/FM Stereo Cassette, 72,000 miles, Excellent Condition) it is only worth $700.00. Since the damage you described would probably run (guesstimate) from $2500.00 to $3000.00 to repair there is no way an insurance company will pay for the repair.

The insurance company will probably give you the blue book value and let you keep the car. At that point you can either get it fixed or junk it. Keep in mind that if you do fix it, the title (depending on state) will be labeled as "Totaled" and would make the car almost impossible to sell.
