Geo Starter
Q. Vincent, I have a 1992 GEO Metro, 3 cylinder, manual transmission. My problem is it will not start on cold mornings. The engine will turn over but too slow to start the engine. I replaced the battery but still have the same symptoms. I measured the battery voltage before (12.5 volts) and during starting (5 volts).
I can eventually get it started when it warms up and it runs fine but the problem returns when cold. After the engine has been started once it then will start normally with the engine being turn over quickly. Would this be a starter problem and if so how do I verify this?
Thanks
A. Assuming the battery is good and of the proper rating, then yes, the problem is probably with the starter. The best way to test it is by doing a current draw test. Before you have it tested however, make sure all the connections from the battery to the starter are clean and tight. Any shop can do this for you at a reasonable price. They can also test the battery, just to make sure it is not defective.
Also make sure you have the proper oil in the engine. In winter you should be using a 5W-30 motor oil.
