Ford Taurus Stuck In Park

Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 2000 Ford Taurus; V-6 3.0 liter, automatic transmission, 71,000 miles, fuel injection, ABS brakes, P/S, A/C, and cruse. After starting the car I am unable to shift from park into any other gear. I depress the brake peddle as specified by Ford to shift out of Park but can not move the gear selector out of Park.

Please respond as soon as possible as I do not want to have the car towed.

Thanks for your advice,
Jeff

A. Okay Jeff, there is a problem with the Shift Interlock System. Look in your owners manual and you'll find the procedure for manually bypassing the Shift Interlock.

Another thing you can try is to put the key in the Accessory position, move the gear shift to N and then start the car. You will be able to shift to R or D from there.

It's probably a bad brake switch, but I would have it checked before you replace it.
