We Be Rocking - Again

Q. Hello Vince, I really appreciate the help your giving out to all the do it yourselfers. It is sometime hard to find good information out there. I e-mailed you a while back about a problem with an 1989 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 rocking back and forth and you told me to replace the sway bar links and bushings, which has been done.

The problem got better but it still sways, although not as often, at higher speeds. I have also changed the compression rod and bushings and the rear sway bar bushings but not the rear sway bar link and the problem still persists. I was wondering if you had any more ideas because I'm running out of things to replace. The rear link with the bushings seemed fine so I didn't replace them.

Thanks again,
Troy

A. I suggested looking at the sway bar mounting brackets under the radiator area. These brackets had a tendency to break. If you replaced the links and bushings connecting the sway bar to the lower control arm, you looked in the wrong area. I found a TSB indicating that the stabilizer brackets and attachment bolts were changed. If the sway bar brackets were what you changed, I would assume that if you got the brackets from the Nissan dealer, they would have given you the new brackets.

The new P/Ns are; Left bracket 56234-88G00, right bracket 56235-88G00, and the new bolts (2 required) 08127-1251E.

Now, assuming all is well with all the brackets, bushings and shocks, the only other possibility is the torsion bars. First check the mounts and bushings for the torsion bars. Make sure they are in good shape and show no signs of wear. If they are okay, the torsion bars may have lost their tension. If the ride height is correct on both sides, then they become a good candidate for replacement.
