Chevy Truck ABS Problem

Q. Hi, I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado truck that I bought about 2 months ago. This is my first truck. It is automatic with ABS brakes, which is my problem, I think. O.K. my problem is, 3 weeks ago I had a main brake cylinder put in my truck because the brakes were bad. Now before I had done this the ABS light was going on (hydraulic) my mechanic said this was just a "stupid" light. Well the light still goes on and when I turn off the truck it will go out, so I do this just to turn off the light. My brakes do a kind of stutter sometimes for no reason, So I brought it back to see what was wrong and he bleed the brakes, they still stutter some times, I brought it back again he said he couldn't find anything. Help........Is it that I am not use to ABS brakes, is this Normal?

Marcia

A. That "stupid" light is there for a reason. I think your mechanic doesn't have a clue about ABS brakes and is trying to hide that fact. Any mechanic that glosses over a brake problem is a dangerous thing. You could have a problem that could potentially, cause grave damage or injury.

Now some pulsations when you apply the brake is normal, and I would have to drive the truck to determine if what you are feeling is normal or not. But since the ABS light is on, the system has detected a problem and I suspect that what you are feeling is not normal. In fact, the problem may be the fact that you don't feel the pulsations.

My advice to you is to take it to a Chevy dealer and let them diagnose the problem as soon as possible. Rest assured that in the event of an ABS failure, the system reverts to normal power brakes.
