Passat Power Windows
Q. Hi - I appreciate your taking the time to look at this problem. All four power windows on my Model Year 2000 / 1999 build Passat Wagon stopped working simultaneously. Prior to this, I hadn't done anything unusual with the car (i.e. I haven't installed any new electronics or otherwise tinkered).
There was a rattling sound that used to come from the drivers side door when closing it. That seems to now be gone. With the ignition switch engaged, when I click the window switches I hear responses from each of the 4 doors. I've checked the fuse. The owner's manual mentions that there is a circuit breaker but I don't know where it is.
I'm a little nervous about opening up the door if there's an easier place to look first. I also believe that some elements of the door are probably harder to get back in than others. Nonetheless, with the great weather we're having out east I'd like to be able to open the windows.
Thanks for you advice.
BrandonA. The first thing to do would be to check the Door Control Module (built into the drivers door switch). That should just pop right out. Make sure the 16 pin connector is firmly seated into the DCM. If it is the next thing to check is the 29 pin connector at the door motor. I have a feeling it came off. You will have to remove the door panel to get to it. All the power and grounds to the window motors goes through the 29 pin connector so that is the most place to find the problem.
Each window motor has a circuit breaker built into it. That is probably what the manual is referring to.
