Bimmer Vibration

Q. Hi Vincent, I recently purchased a 1995 BMW M3 Coupe with a 3.0 liter 6 cyl engine and 5 Speed standard transmission. The car has 50,000 miles and is in immaculate condition.

My problem is this: A few days ago, the car developed what I refer to as a vibration. Not like a wheel balancing vibration, but a slight "uncomfortable" vibration feeling in the steering wheel, clutch pedal, accelerator, and shift. It is present throughout all gears and at all speeds. It is even present when the car is stopped and at idle speed. It is uncomfortable and annoying as it kind of feels like your foot is standing on a vibrator. I am concerned and worried that it may be a serious problem. Please help and advise.

Thank you very much,
John

A. It sounds like something in the engine or transmission is out of balance. The first thing I would look at is the cooling fan blades. If one is missing or loose, it will cause a vibration like you describe. It is also possible the water pump bearing is bad as well.

You might also have an engine miss. Maybe a bad plug wire, distributor cap or spark plug. I would check the basics first and if it does not resolve the problem, a technician will have to determine where the vibration is coming from.
