Chevy S-10 Blazer EGR Problem
Q. I have a 1992 Chevy S-10 Blazer, and I've been having emission problems. The check engine soon light goes on and off, and the problem is worse during long trips. I was told twice that it was an EGR problem.
The first time I paid to have it cleaned. The mechanic said if it continued, to replace the valve. Later I had it into the dealer, they said GM had problems with the VIN "W" engine code EGR valves getting carboned up. I told them about being on vacation when it happened to me, and I disconnected the wiring plug at the valve, and it ran like new the rest of the trip, but the light stayed on. They didn't seem to have an answer for that one.
Well after finally breaking down and paying $150 for a new one, I still have the same problem. I've felt all along that either a sensor, the computer, or the chip, is telling the EGR valve to open too far and/or stay open. But I can't seem to find anyone that is smart enough to diagnose the problem. Can you offer some assistance? It is a 4.3 L V6 engine.
Thank you,
RandyA. There is a procedure for testing the Linear EGR system and I'm surprised the GM dealer didn't do it. GM knows they have a problem with the LEGR and have extended the warranty on it to 7 years/70,000 miles.
The test procedure involves the use of a scan tool so it's not something you can check yourself. I would follow up with the dealer and get the district factory rep involved in this. He will be able to help get this problem resolved.
