Steering Column Mounting And Shaft Components Diagram

To drop the column, remove the two screws going up under the dash, (13)

Remove the two screws at the bottom of the column, (12) unbolt the intermediate shaft upper (3) by removing the bolt (10). The steering column shaft secured to the intermediate coupling has a slot where bolt (10) goes through. This bolt has to be completely removed before the shaft can be removed. Use a screwdriver to spread the coupling apart on the intermediate coupling. The boot (7) is a hassle and always in the way. It can be forced backward (toward the floor board) and tucked under the intermediate coupling lower end.

At the bottom of the steering shaft Lower (1) there are two push on lock ring washers, spring and shaft seal.

Take note of the distance of the lock ring washers from the end of the shaft.

Pry off the two lock rings. Remove the Spring and pull off the Shaft seal. When reinstalling, place on in reverse order. A piece of 3/4 PVC pipe will assist in the installation of the Lock Ring washers. See item 26, 27 and 28 on previous page.
