Rake Removal And Installation Procedure:© 2003 Alvie Rodgers C.E.T.This is called the RAKE. This is the linkage that meshes with the ignition lock assembly, (the one where the key goes into) with the teeth on the right with the linkage rod which snaps into to the Rake on the left. The linkage rod goes into the ignition switch itself mounted on the upper center top of the column.
To remove this, the Column should be out of the Car and on a work bench.
- Remove the Key Lock Assembly.
- Back the 4 screws holding the upper shaft housing to the bowl assembly out about ¼". These are accessible only after disassembling the steering column to this point.
- Back the upper shaft away from the bowl assembly about a ¼".
- Remove the dimmer switch and ignition switch assembly.
- The rod linkage is engaged with the ignition switch. Lift up the ignition switch to disengage this linkage.
- Slide the Rake out of the bowl assembly. Take careful note of the column lock assembly and the gear shift lock assembly and you remove.
To reinstall:
- Place the gear shift is any gear other than park. To do this, if the gear shift lock is engaged, us a screwdriver to press down on the mechanism to move the gear shift. This will keep the lock mechanism in the off position for Rake installation.
- It's important now to make sure of two important things.
To do this, slide the ignition switch assembly back and forth several time to determine it's state. Towards the floor board is the Start position. Towards the steering wheel is the accessory position. One click back from the steering wheel side towards the floor board is the Off position. The gear shift handle will have to be in the Park position for this too. Place the Rack in first before moving the gear shift to the Park position.
- The ignition switch assembly is in the Off position.
- This ignition key lock assembly is in the Off position.
- This may be confusing, but let me try. If you hold on the the ignition switch assembly with your hand and having the actuator rod engaged with the switch, then the movement of the switch assembly is backwards from the described position above. In other words, moving the assembly while the rod is stationary works backwards but it's the easiest way to move the switch. In this case the assembly moves towards the floor board to place the switch in the accessory position and towards the steering wheel moves the switch to the Start position.
- Moving the Rod and Rake; Floorboard side is Start, Steering wheel side is Accessory.
- Moving the switch assembly with the Rake and Rod stationary; Floorboard side is Accessory, Steering wheel side is Start.
