Honda Accord Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Q. Hi, My speedometer used to bounce around a lot, now it just sits there. I was told the speed sensor was bad, but before replacing it, I should take it off and clean all connections to make sure it really needed to be replaced. One person told me I have to take off a tire to get to it and another told me it was on the transmission. Questions:
- Where is the speed sensor and how do I get to it? I know what it looks like, but not where to look for it. I seen the diagram you had given another person for a 1994 Honda Accord, is it the same for my 1991 Honda Accord EX?
- Would you recommend trying to clean it off before replacing in case its just a bad connection? If so, what's the best way to clean it?
- If I need to buy a new one, what do you think about buying parts off of eBay?
Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
LaurieA. Here you go Laurie!
1. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is located underneath the thermostat housing. The 1991 model is basically the same as the 1994 model.

2. You can certainly try, it won't hurt and can only help. I use a small piece of fine emory cloth and slide it in and out of the female side of the terminal. Then I use a small pick to tighten it and make sure it is a firm fit. If that doesn't help, here's how to replace it.
- Disconnect the 3-P connector from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
- Remove the mounting bolts, then remove the VSS.
NOTE: The VSS drive link is a very small part, be careful not to lose it.- Install in the reverse order of removal.

3. I've heard good and bad about buying parts off of eBay. Personally I have never purchased any parts through eBay. If you do decide to purchase one, read the description very carefully. Especially if they will warranty the part or is it sold "as is". If there is a warranty, who pays the return shipping?
A brand, spanking new VSS from a Honda Dealer is $154.95 (P/N 78410-SY0003. So look at the cost of the part plus shipping to see if it is worth it.
