Nissan Maxima Loses Power While Driving
Q. Please Help. I have a:
- 1992 Nissan Maxima
- 3.0 liter V-6
- Automatic transmission
- Fuel injected
- Motor showing 95,000 miles
- P/S, P/B, A/C, and cruise control
Lately, The motor looses power and/or stalls. This can occur at idle or any speed. The car also has a transmission select switch, comfort, power and automatic, located on the console in front of the shifter. A light indicates which mode you are in, comfort, power, and automatic. I usually leave it in the automatic position.
Anyhow, when the car looses power, the transmission switch power mode light comes on and then goes out. Further, I can drive the car with that switch unplugged; however I still have the problem. I know this is an extremely difficult problem as I also work in the repair field, electrical.
The previous owner has always maintained the car at a certified Nissan Dealer. The last service to the car was an oil change about 3,000 miles ago. Thanks in advance. Any advice would be appreciated.

A. We can do a self-diagnosis of the fuel injection system and the transmission control system. That may give us a DTC that will help us determine where to look. To get the procedure to get the codes from the PCM, look here. Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
And here is the procedure for obtaining the codes. Once we know what the codes are, we can work from there.
