Honda Accord Fails Emissions Inspection

Q. Vince: I cannot seem to find information on the 1999 Honda Accord Coupe with a 3.0 liter V-6 engine. My car will not pass inspection due to the EGR.

Honda Accord Fails Emissions Inspection

I would appreciate if you could please give me procedural advice on how to replace the EGR valve for this vehicle including a diagram of it's location. All other sources reference a 4 cylinder and not a 6 cylinder.

A. Here you go!!

Honda Accord Fails Emissions Inspection
Left Side of V-6 Engine

Before you go doing anything with it, you should know there was a recall on this vehicle due to EGR problems.

Recall - DTC P0401 EGR Flow/EGR Port Clogging

Number: 99-085
Date: October 26, 2001

Applies To:
1998 to 2000 Accord V-6: All
2001 Accord V-6
4-door from VIN 1HGCG1...1A000001 thru 1HGCG1...1A058564
2-door from VIN 1HGCG2...1A000001 thru 1HGCG2...1A023388

MIL Is On With DTC P0401

SYMPTOM:
The MIL is on and DTC P0401 (Insufficient EGR Flow) is set.

PROBABLE CAUSE:
The EGR port in the intake manifold is clogged.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Clean the EGR port. Replace the intake manifold chamber and the PCV hose.

WARRANTY EXTENSION INFORMATION:
This warranty extension cancels the PCV hose routing Product Update Campaign. You should no longer install the PCV hose routing kit.

American Honda is extending the warranty on EGR system problems in the affected vehicles to 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. To be eligible for coverage under this extended warranty, the MIL must be on with one of the above DTCs stored. Install the EGR pipe kit, and file a claim using the information in this service bulletin.

So I would take it to your Honda Dealer and find out if the recall was performed and if not, have it done.
