Jeep Cherokee Blower Motor Replacement

Q. On my 2000 Jeep Cherokee we noticed a hot smell then we noticed the heater fan would just work on high and it was louder than normal. I think it is the fan. Is the fan hard to change or should I have a mechanic do it?

Thanks,
Roy

A. If the vehicle has A/C, the system will have to be evacuated to in order to get the blower motor out. In this case I would recommend having a qualified mechanic do the job.

If it doesn't have A/C, then you can easily do the job yourself. The blower motor is located in the passenger side end of the heater housing, below the glove box.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the lower kick cover.
  3. Unplug the blower motor wire harness connector.
  4. Remove the three screws that secure the blower motor to the heater housing.
  5. Rotate and tilt the blower motor as needed for clearance to remove the blower motor from the heater housing.
  6. Just reverse the procedure to reinstall.

Might I suggest replacing the blower motor resistor first? A bad blower motor resistor will only allow the blower motor to work on high speed only. Once you replace it then you can decide if the blower motor itself needs replacing. To replace the blower motor resistor:

  1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
  2. Remove the kick cover from the heater-A/C housing.
  3. Pull out the lock on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector to unlock the connector latch.
  4. Depress the latch on the blower motor resistor wire harness connector and unplug the connector from the resistor.
  5. Remove the two screws that secure the resistor to the heater-A/C housing.
  6. Remove the resistor from the heater-A/C housing.
  7. Reverse the removal procedures to install.

I think, I hope anyway, that's all you'll need to do.
