Ford Mustang Convertible Top

Q. I have a 1992 Ford Mustang convertible and my top no longer goes up or down. Every time I press the lever/or button to make it either go up or down the pump motor makes some sort of noise like if it wanted to function, but the top still does not go up or down. I was wondering if I either had to replace to the pump motor or if I only have to refill it or if it is another problem all in its own.

A. The first thing to do would be to check the hydraulic fluid level in the Convertible Top Pump.

Remove the filler plug and check the fluid level. It should be level with the bottom of the filler plug hole. If fluid appears excessively low, check for leaks or restrictions in the hydraulic lines, loose or broken fittings, and/or damaged cylinders.

If the fluid level is okay, and the Convertible Top Pump is still making abnormal noises, then chances are good the pump itself is bad.
