Ford Explorer Idle Hunts When Cold
Q. 1999 Ford Explorer, 4.0 liter. Cold weather start, engine lopes at idle, idles high and then low almost stalls then back up until engine warms up. Warmer temperatures [above 40° approximately] starts runs fine. Is this EGR valve? 52,000 miles, most of it short trips of 4 miles a days.
Please give me information on how I can do that. So that hopefully as soon as possible I could start the project I have made for myself.
Thank you...
A. I don't think it's an EGR problem. An open EGR valve would degradate idle speed more warm than clod. I would think it more likely a problem with the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. If it tells the PCM the engine is hotter than it actually is, the PCM will lean out the fuel mixture and cause the symptoms you describe.
