Hyundai Accent Rotten Transmissions

Q. Dear Vincent Ciulla, I am having consistent problems with my 2003 Hyundai Accent. I bought my vehicle new and after 18,802 miles the transmission went out. The car jerked until the lower RPMs changed, the RPMs also hesitated before changing, and when changed would quickly pull back.

The transmission was replaced and now only a year later my transmission went out again. The RPMs would keep going up until I took my foot off the gas pedal, I could not drive over 20 mph. I put my vehicle into reverse several times and was finally able to drive my car to the dealer. The dealer could not find the problem and would not do anything.

A week later my car broke down. I could not accelerate while I was driving; the car would not go over 20 mph. I had my vehicle towed to the dealer. I was told there was a short with the speed sensor and pulse generator. The pulse generator was replaced, but my car is still not working properly. It will intermittently shift at 5,000 rpms, shifting seems rough, I'm still having trouble accelerating.

Do you happen to know what would be causing this continual problem with a two year old vehicle? Are these two problems connected? What would cause the transmission to go out as it did? I would greatly appreciate any information or advice you can offer.

Thank you so much!
Jennifer

A. This transmission has more than it's share of problems. There are a number of TSBs issued by Hyundai addressing one kind of problem or another.

I think you have given them enough opportunity to repair the problems and may have recourse under your states Lemon Law. You will need to check your states web site to find the particulars.

I would also suggest calling Hyundai Customer Service and filing a complaint with them. Request an appointment with the District Factory Representative and discuss it with him. He will be able to expedite repairs or see about a replacement vehicle.
