Three Volkswagen Jetta Questions II

Q. Hi, this is Eddie again with the 1989 Volkswagen Jetta. Three Volkswagen Jetta Questions. I replaced the thermostat as you suggested and the car is still revving up high and running cool. Also, got no heat. What do you suggest I should do next? Also, it was a nightmare changing the thermostat but never the less I got it done.

Thanks,
Eddie

Three Volkswagen Jetta Questions II

A. A new thermostat should have fixed this problem. By not doing so I would have to suspect a defective thermostat or you installed it backwards.

Remove the radiator cap and put a thermometer in the radiator. Let the engine run and watch the temperature. If the thermostat is working there should be a sudden rise when it opens. Here's the specifications:

  • Starts to open 85°C (185°F)
  • Fully open 105°C (221°F)

If it does not meet these specifications after an hour, or so, of running I would have to say you have a bad thermostat or it is in backwards.
